BES Fishing Club Boat Trip Report: July 18th, 2024
Today, BES Fishing Club embarked on our now second annual end of year celebration with help from our friends on the Capt. Cal II.
With a quick head count and reminder to yell, “fish on” when you got a bite; we were off to another adventure we wouldn’t forget.
The sights and sounds of the Belmar Marina are not easily forgotten. The turning over of the huge engines followed by the smell of diesel in the air, it always feels nostalgic. “When are we leaving?”, “How much longer?”, “Do you think we will catch anything?”, “Can you tell me the story of the biggest fish you ever caught?” In what seems like a lifetime ago, I asked these same questions to my father as we waited to take off.
Before we knew it, the horn blew and we were off to fishing. The first few drifts were slow, therefore, a few bags of Taki’s and what seemed like every sub option that Jersey Mike’s has to offer was taken down to pass the time. Besides the fishing, this is what it’s all about. Being out on the water, joking with your friends, and telling stories about your latest catch or the one that got away.
In the ladder half of the trip, the action started to heat up. Capt. Ron ventured north to hit the muscle beds and rough bottom. Before we knew, we were in the action. “Ding a Ling!”, Mrs. Travers yelled as she swung a Red Hake (Ling) overboard. “Sea Bass in the boat”, hollered Mrs. Veltre. “Fish on!”, another exclaimed. The catches were picking up. I mustered under my breath, “we didn’t get skunked, thank God.”
It was a beautiful day on the water and we lucked out to have some action alongside fair weather. Almost everyone caught something. On our way in as the sunset and American flag rippled in the background Mr. Alvarez noted, “It’s not just about fishing, it’s about perseverance.”
As always, a good time was had by all and special thanks to Mr. Alvarez, Mrs, Travers, and Mrs. Veltre for making it possible to go today.
Thanks for reading our story and stay tuned for more this upcoming school year.
