Hispanic employees reflect on their time at Belmar Elementary School

BELMAR, NJ — With Hispanic Heritage Month coming to an end this Saturday, TAPinto reached out to some of Belmar Elementary School’s Hispanic employees, who shared insights on what it’s like to work at Belmar Elementary School and how their heritage is reflected in their positions.

One of these employees is Liz Terado, the school’s Spanish interpreter, who has worked at the school for a few years now. Part of Terado’s job is translating and interpreting Spanish for students, staff and parents when a language barrier is present. Additionally, she is responsible for translating school notices and documents for students and parents.

“I’m the liaison between the parents and teachers and students,” Terado said. “I call (Spanish-speaking) parents on behalf of the teachers, on behalf of the nurse. I always think of my Mom, who never spoke English, I think of her and other parents, and they have this opportunity to be able to communicate with the teacher. I’m kind of like their voice really, it’s a very gratifying job.”
