BELMAR, NJ — When Belmar Elementary School teacher Lu Stierman was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer in February, her colleagues told her that she can step away from her work to cope with the news. Stierman, who is described by colleagues as “a rockstar,” refused to step away and continued with her work because it “brings her joy.”

What Stierman didn’t do was expect the immense support she’d receive from her coworkers and friends throughout her eight-month journey. From gifts to words of encouragement, she’d thought that she’d been given everything from her coworkers, until they decided to walk alongside her in a walk-a-thon and 5K to benefit Mary’s Place by the Sea (a respite home for women with cancer in Ocean Grove).

“It’s been incredible, I’m overwhelmed by the support from the school from top to bottom, administration to staff,” Stierman told TAPinto. “I just feel so honored and filled with the support that our school has given me, it’s just been incredible.”
